Weekly Writing Challenge, fun with words,

Shabby Investigation

Esther Chilton Writing Challenge for April 30, 2026

Can You Write A Story In … 57 words using the following words in it somewhere:

Cat,
Pies,
Travesty,
Diamonds,
Chair,
Stationary

Leaning forward in the chair, the detective scrutinized two faded pictures—pies sitting on an open window’s sill and a cat stretched out beside its empty dish. No mention of diamonds in the report was a travesty.

No wonder it became a cold case.

The detective reached for a blank piece of stationary and wrote SHABBY INVESTIGATING.

Esther Chilton lives in England where she is a freelance writer and a writing tutor for The Writers Bureau. Her weekly writing challenge, ‘Can You Tell A Story In…’ is enjoyed by writers from around the globe.

Wonderful! Leaves you scratching your head. Diamonds? Why diamonds?

Prompt said diamonds needed to be included – shomehow.
