Claiming Your Passion

Being known as a writer can be a tough row to hoe. Questions about what inspires me to write come my way from friends, family, and those passing through. The inspiration to write is a journey faced every day, regardless if it’s a passion or a livelihood.

There are those who take their inspiring moments from their faith. Others draw from their day-to-day experiences. Some draw on their addiction to write by inspiration from what others write.

My urge to get words on paper comes from… Let’s see where to start? Ideally, “It is where I am from that guides me on the journey to where I need to go”; which throws the door wide open for me to write about anything, anyone and everything that passes my way.

Topics that interest me can be sparked by memories found in something I read or see or perhaps repeated in conversations. It could be about nature, western heritage, traditions, any topic that interests me. Whatever the imagination or combination thereof that claimed a spot in my mind at a given moment is fair game to be written about.

At the end of a retreat I attended several years ago, we were challenged to reflect on the statement, “What Am I Claiming?”

From those four words, I wrote an impulsive, raw, creative sentence. “A vision to start a vision” and followed it with:

Letting the mind and body connect. Visualize what we leave behind in the quest for what is in store. Claim a path. Select the moments of importance. Store those memories; don’t discard them. Let them grow dust on the shelf. They are the trail to unbridled passions.

You see, at that given moment, I was given inspiration to write. It was not necessarily a reflection or reaction of the question we’d been given, it was an opportunity to claim my mind’s thoughts on paper at that point in time. The whole point of the exercise was to name the thing(s) we felt passionate about. What were we going to take with us on our journey – be it success in business, a relationship, personal growth, or life in general?

If you are passionate about writing, or anything for that matter, don’t be afraid to record your words, your thoughts, no matter where you are or what you are doing. The one-liner, or possibly the pages you pen, may be the beginning of something great. Claim It!

Is there a passion you have claimed?
